Social Studies in X-TRA

“Social Studies” was published in X-TRA as a conversation with Hugo Hopping about art and social engagement. In reality it was a series of emails, Skype conversations, and notes from previous in-person discussions that have been edited down (from more than 60 pages) and patched back together into something like a back-and-forth. We touch on some of our own initiatives TELIC, ESL, The Public School, Free MFA, AAAARG.ORG in relation to the role of theory in art, the longer history of alternative, artist-instigated education models, and collaboration. The article was edited by Shana Lutker as a part of a series of four artists’ conversations about medium. [ read pdf ]
